4am - the golden hour?
Why 4 A.M. Is My Best and Worst Writing Time?
You ever have that one time of day where everything just clicks? Where you’re most productive and energised and ready to tackle everything head on?
For me, it’s 4 a.m. Yeah, I know, sounds fucking crazy. But hear me out—there’s something about the dead silence, the pitch-black outside, and the fact that the whole world is asleep, and there’s no one to bother me that just works. It’s either that I drank too much coffee the day before and am still wired.
I wake up, make myself a coffee and then I sit down with my laptop and hope for the best. With my headphones in, writing playlist on and my computer screen covered, I get into the writing zone and 9 times out of 10 it results in me smashing out 3,000 words in an hour. Most of them make sense. Some… not so much.
It’s not always easy though. Some mornings, the words flow like wine, and I’m in the zone. Other nights? They’re a awkward as bad first date, and leave me questioning my decisions to write a romance.
I see a lot of authors asking how others juggle life and kids and work. Well… this is how I do it. You have to find the time that works for you. Eat the frog or whatever that saying is.
If I get up early and write, the hardest part of my day is done before the sun rises and before my focus is needed elsewhere. FOr others it might be a night when everyone is on bed, or maybe on your lunch break, standing in line at the checkout, waiting for the doctor. Find the perfect time and stick to it.
